When thinking about your career growth and development, think of it as a brand new car. The first thing you noticed when making this relation, is that you are in the driver seat and in control. Often time we hear this, yet I see so many people struggling with this simple notion. You call your own shots and make your own moves in the life of Corporate America. Of course there are a few road blocks, detours and in some cases traffic but you must learn to steer through it all. Now before you get behind the wheel of a car we need to cover the basics.

First off, you need some gas in this car. When you think about your career development, you need to have motivation to keep you going and staying afloat. There will be times, you find yourself sitting in traffic, and have steered along so many alternate routes, that you run out of gas. Don’t be discouraged, refuel and get back on the road. Remember you are in control. When looking for motivation, first look within yourself and then surround yourself with positive thinkers. A mentor once said, “don’t surround yourself with people going nowhere, because they will slow you down”. So when you are looking for this new car, look around at the people at the dealership and surround yourself with them, because just like you, they are trying to go somewhere.

Second, be sure to buckle up and drive safe. People tend to believe that the only way to the top is by side swiping others. There is no need to stab people in the back and gain a negative reputation trying to get the next promotion. Remember, this is the place you spend most of your time, so be cordial (wave out your window every once in a while). Keep your eyes on the road and know where you going. Your career growth and development should be mapped out. You should know at what point to turn, merge onto, veer to the right, etc. Basically, you need a plan! Often time we hop behind the wheel, but don’t even know where we are going. So before you make that move, take the time to write it all down and think it through.

Last but not least, be sure to utilize the rear view and side mirrors. This is essential, because you have to keep your eyes on those not only in front, but those behind you. Not everyone is looking out for you, so be sure to look up and keep tabs on those creeping upon your success. Some may try to rear end you or race you to the top, so just be cautious of those because they are everywhere and do whatever they can to steer you off your path. Stay focus! But most importantly, utilize those rearview mirrors to see how far you came, and look ahead, because you are going even further.

So as you get in this new car be sure to gas up, put your seat belt on, adjust your rearview and side mirrors, change that gear from (P)ark to (D)rive and take control of your career growth and development. Drive into your Destiny.
